On July 31, 2023, in Bishkek, UNDP and the Public Association “Kyrgyz Association of Women Judges” held a round table on the development of a training system within the framework of the joint EU-UN Beam of Light Initiative on increasing gender sensitivity and skills to identify family and gender-based violence among lawyers of the Legal Aid Service and specialists of state bodies involved in the “Solidarity Bus” campaign.

The Legal Aid Service under the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic annually organizes the “Solidarity Bus” campaign, in which lawyers and employees of other government agencies with extensive experience provide free legal advice and assistance to socially vulnerable segments of the population.

The roundtable included a presentation and discussion of the Training Training Course: “Providing Gender Sensitive and Survivor-Oriented Services for Survivors of Gender-Based and Family Violence in Legal Counseling” for lawyers, justice, social and other service providers in the field within the framework of the “Solidarity Bus” project, as well as a discussion of the design and concept of the online version based on the developed course.

On the joint EU-UN Spotlight Initiative: In January 2020, in partnership with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, the EU and the UN launched a multi-year country program under the global Spotlight Initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. The goal of the program is to create an environment in which all women and girls in Kyrgyzstan, especially the most vulnerable, live free from violence and harmful practices, including child marriage and ala kachuu. The program includes a set of integrated interventions in the areas of policy and legislation, institutional strengthening, violence prevention, services for survivors, quality data collection, and support to the women’s movement and civil society. The program is implemented by five UN agencies (UN Women, UNFPA, UNDP, UNICEF and UNODC) under the overall leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic.
